5 Math Giants Who Have Inspired Me

Standing on the shoulders of MATH GIANTS...

I will be eternally grateful for many people in the math education sphere. I'm especially grateful for you because you are spending your precious time reading this blog and taking into consideration what I'm sharing, possibly even taking a risk and taking action to try something new in your class or look into an additional resource, ALL with good intentions to make teaching math more enjoyable and to provide your students with the best possible learning experiences. THANK YOU!

Estimation 180 and much of the work I do as a classroom teacher around number sense, problem-solving, student thinking, and curriculum design has been greatly inspired by math giants who have paved the way for us (and our students) to benefit from. At the risk of forgetting someone (my apologies) I kept my list to 5 people as if I were picking my starting lineup for a math basketball team. Thank you Brad Fulton, Marcy Cook, Steve Leinwand, Marilyn Burns, and Dan Meyer. They have made countless contributions!

In the video below I briefly speak to how they've impacted my craft as a math educator. I hope they will inspire you too and maybe you'll dive deeper into their work.

I've also made a YouTube Playlist of my favorite videos from these giants.

AS A REMINDER, it's not about being a math giant to the masses at conferences, on social media, websites, books, blogs, etc. It's about being a math giant to your students. Be proud of the work you do. If you feel like you don't get as much gratitude as you think you deserve, then please know that I'm grateful for you. I'm thankful for you taking the time to read this post, watch this video, or use any of my resources with your students. I'm grateful you might use other math educator's resources and strategies or create your own... so long as you make teaching math more enjoyable and provide your students with the best possible learning experiences. THANK YOU!
